The Lands Of
Indonesia
Indonesia is an archipelago of over 17000 islands with a population
more than 200 million square kilometers. Indonesia has about
400 volcanoes where 70 still active.
Bahasa Indonesia is the official language. English is frequently
used in commerce. The peoples are predominantly Muslim, others
being Christians, Hindus, and Buddists.
Indonesia climate is hot and humid througout the year, however
the official wet seasons run from October to August and is
marked by some heavy, short rainstorms. Temperatures range
from 21 to 33 Celcius in the lowlands. Higher altitudes enjoy
cooler conditions.
Immigration
No visa required, if you are nationals of Argentina, Australia,
Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Denmark,
Egypt, Finland, Greece, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy,
Jpan, Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Malaysia, Malta, Morocco,
Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Singapore,
South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan,
Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America,
United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.
All visitors must have a valid passport for at least six
months from the date of arrival. Proof of return tickets are
also required. Eligible visitors can stay for a maximum of
2 months, to travel and to attend conventions and seminars.
Currency
Exchange facilities for the main foreign currencies are
available in bank of at authorised money changers in major
cities in Indonesia. Rupiah comes in denominations of 100.000,
50.000, 20.000, 10.000, 5.000, 1.000, 500, and 100 in bank
notes, and 1000, 500, 100, and 50 in coins.
Communications
Long distance telephone calls within or outside Indonesia
are by direct dialling International Direct Dialling (IDD)
is available in 32 provincial capitals and in more than 320
cities throughout the country. For business travellers, faximile,
telex, and email services are available in most hotels and
at service outlets.
Time
Indonesia is divided into three time zones, Western Indonesia
Time (Sumatra, Java, West and Central Kalimantan) is seven
hours ahead of GMT. Central Indonesia Time including Bali,
South and East Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara is eight
hours ahead. Finally, East Indonesia Time including Maluku
and Irian Jaya is nine hours ahead of GMT.
Electricity
50 Hz at either 110 or 220 volts
Office Hours
Most government offices are open from 8am to 3pm. On Fridays,
they are closed at 11:30am. On Saturdays, they are open until
2 or 3pm. Business offices open from 8 or 9am to 4 or 5pm.
Some work half day on Saturdays. Banks open from 8am to 3pm
on weekdays. Banks are closed on Saturdays. Money changer
are open longer hours till the evening.
